Europe's Motorway Rest Stops: A Truck Stop Guide for HGV Drivers

Long-haul trucking across Europe demands proper rest, and knowing where to stop can make all the difference. This guide covers what to expect from motorway rest stops and truck stops in the main European freight countries, and how to find a safe place to park for your break or overnight rest.

Plan Stops Around Your Driving Hours

Under the EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation 561/2006, which also applies in Great Britain), you need a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and a daily rest of 11 hours, which can be reduced to 9 hours up to three times between weekly rests. A regular weekly rest of 45 hours may not be taken in the cab. In practice, that means knowing in advance where your break and your overnight stop will be, not looking for a space when your hours run out.

Safe and Secure Truck Parking (SSTPA)

The EU has a common standard for safe and secure truck parking areas, with four certification levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Certified sites are assessed on things like perimeter fencing, CCTV, lighting, access control and driver facilities. The European Commission publishes a list of certified parking areas, which is worth checking before longer trips, especially if you carry high-value loads.

Germany: Autohof Truck Stops

Alongside the motorway service areas on the Autobahn itself, Germany has 'Autohof' truck stops: privately run sites just off the motorway, signposted from the exit. They are usually larger than the service areas and most offer fuel, food, toilets and showers, but facilities and security vary from site to site. Trucks over 7.5 tonnes may not drive on Sundays and public holidays, so truck parking near motorways is busiest on Saturday evenings.

France: Aires de Repos and Aires de Service

French motorways have two types of stop. An 'aire de repos' offers parking, toilets and usually picnic areas, while an 'aire de service' adds fuel, a shop and food. France also restricts HGV traffic at weekends and on public holidays, so expect busier truck parking before those periods.

Spain: The Mediterranean Corridor

The AP-7 along the Mediterranean coast is one of the main freight routes between Spain and the rest of Europe. The La Jonquera area, at one of the busiest French–Spanish crossings, has several large truck stops, and the sites close to the border fill up quickly in the evening.

Netherlands: Limited Space, Plan Ahead

Truck parking capacity in the Netherlands is limited in places, especially around the main ports and logistics hubs. Plan overnight stops in advance and check whether the site you choose is suitable for a long rest, not just a short break.

Poland: MOPs on Motorways and Expressways

Polish motorways and expressways have MOPs (miejsca obsługi podróżnych). They range from basic parking areas with toilets to full service areas with fuel, food and showers, so check which type is ahead before relying on it for a long rest.

Tips for Choosing Rest Stops

When selecting a rest stop, consider: parking security (look for fencing, lighting and CCTV), shower availability and cleanliness, food options beyond vending machines, fuel prices and accepted payment methods, and Wi-Fi connectivity for route planning and staying in touch with dispatch.

Apps for Finding Truck Stops in Europe

Apps like TruckParkingEurope, where drivers share details and reviews of truck parking across Europe, and SNAP, used to pay for and book parking at partner sites, especially in the UK, can save time and reduce stress. Popular stops fill up quickly, especially on major routes, in the evening and before weekend driving bans, so always have a back-up option.
